Shutter Up 5

A beginning photography class

The class is targeted at the youth of Washington County with the goal being an introduction to photographic concepts and principals including camera history and development, early pioneers, the workings of a modern camera, and digital darkroom techniques. We spend the initial classroom time learning the cameras and how to adjust the knobs and dials for best photographic results. We then take a field trip so we can put what we have learned to practical use.

I have taught this class five times now and find that each one is uniquely different. The students each see with their own perspective which causes me to re-think how I look at things. Despite the intense heat during our class (classroom was in the upper eighties some of the time) these kiddos maintained a positive attitude and learned a lot about cameras and digital photography. I have selected my favorite portrait, created by Kendall plus some of my images taken during our walkabout in Downtown Hillsboro.

Kendall

Kendall

My name is Kendall.

Below are some of my best photos as selected by our instructor.  He also selected a portrait made by Allie.

Gracie

Gracie

Name: Gracie Reardon
Age: 12
School: Brown Middle School

Why I Took This Class: I chose to take Shutter Up after seeing a flier at school. My Grandpa and Dad both own cameras, and
when I was younger my Mom found an old small camera and let me and little brothers use it. I thought it would be cool to take
this class because I like using my Mom’s phone to take photos of my old toys and I wanted better quality pictures.

My Favorite Photos: My favorite photo that I took during this class is a photo of a sunflower. I like this picture in particular
because it is very focused on the flower and blurs out the background. I also like the blue flowers, the license plates and design on the book exchange, and the garden gnome.

Elaina

Elaina

I’m Elaina and I’m a seventh grader at Evergreen Middle School. I took the shutter up class because I wanted to learn more about photography.

Of my favorite shots from the class, I like the picture of the ice cream because it’s focused great I think, and I see the texture of the bubbles plus I like the blue and pink color. I also like the picture of my aunt’s dog. She likes to run around the yard a lot so I decided to take pictures of her running. Another favorite is the bird on the wind chime. like this picture because the blue on the bird’s wings is the only color that shows besides the the green in the background

I like the courthouse column picture because of the angle i shoot it at I like the brick wall picture because of how straight it is. Straightforward the camera was to the wall My portrait was done by Allie and it is my favorite of all portraits.

Allie

Allie

My name is Allie Carothers-Humphrey. I’m a HillHi Student, A volleyball, softball player, and artist. I joined the class to have access to a camera and learn a bit more of how they work After having taken a photography class in school and enjoying it. The “sign photo” as i like to call it was from a hike in the Columbia Gorge up to Ponytail falls. The photos of the flowers are from a walk around my hometown, Hillsboro. As for the portraits, those are photos of my classmates and instructor. All of these photos were taken by me. The photo of Me was taken by Kendall, my classmate.
